My Pursuit of Knowledge

Future Learning

My favorite kind of movies are the ones that are based on true events. This is mainly because I like to learn about events that have impacted the world we live in today. After completing my Bachelor of Science (BSc), I set only one goal for myself and that was to make sure that I at least learn one new thing every day for the rest of my life. That could be as simple as Googling a question that pops into my head, enrolling in an online course, traveling to a new country, or even watching a good movie.

Every day can be an opportunity to build or enhance our life experiences and defining milestones allows us to become better versions of ourselves. Due to setting my learning goals, dedicating time, and planning a roadmap, I applied for a Master of Arts in Education (MAED) when I thought it was time. Now that I am approaching the end of this milestone, I am planning on setting my future learning opportunities. Take a look at the three goals I aim to achieve in my near future.

Know your audience. During my graduate courses, I learned how to adapt new technologies to support learning. As a content writer, I was especially interested in the Cognitive Load Theory and how effective techniques can be used to reduce any obstacles when processing information. I now believe that the quality of my work will be more effective if the role and limitations of the working memory are taken into consideration.

I would like to learn more about how students learn, which I believe can be utilized while designing learning experiences. My first step to learning more on this topic is to stay up to date with the latest research and practices to improve learning. LEARNING & the BRAIN has a useful blog to stay updated. I hope that in the future I can complete a MOOC or certificate on the science of learning.

1. Understand how people learn

2. Step out of my comfort zone

Don’t fear failure. During my teaching experience, the issue that stood out the most was that students’ motivation levels for learning were rather low. I believe that in most cases this is due to the fact that content and instruction were being taught in an outdated language. In our world of evolving technology, I aim to bring content to life and create engaging learning opportunities.

I believe that new ideas and tools are constantly evolving and it is important to stay up to date. I hope to develop instructional and technical skills to implement new ideas that could enhance my professional work. TED-Ed contains a bank of videos that spark and celebrate ideas shared by teachers and students around the world. By staying curious and learning from others, I can think outside the box to design innovative learning experiences.

Every learner matters. Distance learning has shed light on the disadvantages that vulnerable students face because of their specific backgrounds. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, I started to reimagine how learning experiences can be redesigned to accommodate students coming from different backgrounds and focus on what makes them succeed.

I believe that positive change starts with the curriculum we teach and the learning experiences we provide to each student. I plan to learn more about how to support diversity in the classroom and making the curriculum accessible to all learners. Everyday Antiracism is a book that includes a compilation of experiences written by educators counteracting racial inequality in school. By reading and exposing myself to these stories, I believe I can start to design learning experiences that take into better consideration my learners’ needs and backgrounds.

3. Settle the education debt

Learning today is very different from what it was before COVID-19. The pandemic has affected learners globally and most have transformed areas in their home to new learning spaces. This year digital immigrants and natives alike have experienced and now better understand that educational technology can help overcome barriers of various kinds. I am grateful that my Master’s program journey has taught me the skills to be better prepared to teach in this modern age. Furthermore, due to the exposure of the most current tools available, the course content has increased my interest in topics that are relevant to today’s unique circumstance. That being said, I believe that the above three future learning goals will continue to help me learn and grow in my professional field.
