GRADUATE SHOWCASE

During my time in the Master of Arts in Education (MAED) program, I was able to acquire knowledge and grow as an educator. The majority of my work focused on the effective integration of technology while considering the various interactions that take place during teaching and learning processes. I grouped the artifacts that I present here into three themes that I believe positively influence learning experiences. The themes consist of what I learned about designing multimodal content, creating effective assessments, and applying meaningful instruction. Click on each artifact to view more.

thinking toolkit

Thinking Toolkit

Creativity in the Classroom

Teaching in the modern classroom should nurture students’ capacity to be creative. This piece of work highlights the cross-disciplinary nature of the thinking tools and its integral role in the creative process. The thinking toolkit brings new perspectives, emotions, and understanding that will inspire educators to present content in new ways. In turn, students will be engaged and encouraged to think outside the box.

cognitive load

6 Techniques to Avoid Overload

Cognitive Load Theory

We usually only remember bits and pieces of information when we are learning about it for the first time. As an educator, I am constantly trying to improve my content resources to support learning. In this interactive image, I highlight simple yet effective techniques to reduce cognitive load. I also reflect on how multimodal content can be utilized to positively impact student learning.

Thinking Plan

The Thinking Plan

Metacognitive Prompts

Content should not only cover the subject matter students should master but also the skills that they will need for their future. When designing content, it is important to consider these skills and how they can be integrated into lessons. In this artifact, I present ways to develop 21st-century skills through metacognitive prompts. Students will be able to learn new topics and in parallel think about their thinking.

Assessment Checklist

My Checklist

Assessment Design

Assessment, in its many forms, is an integral part of the culture of learning. If designed successfully, assessment should be part of the learning cycle rather than a means to an end. Feedback on assessments will both close the learning gaps of students and provide useful insights for the teacher. I have created and developed a practical checklist that can be used to design effective assessments.

Game Assessment

DNA Replication

Game-based Assessment

No matter how many times a life is lost in a game, players will try again and again to progress to the next level or gain as many points, coins, or stars as possible. In education, using games for learning has become a powerful motivator. I created a game-based assessment, that allows students to actively learn and think critically in a new context.

Online assessment

Survival of the Fittest

CMS Assessment

I try to explore the affordances and constraints of different tech tools and content management systems (CMS) to see whether they can be used to support my teaching. I designed an assessment focusing on animal adaptations using the features available on Canvas. I used my assessment design checklist to assess the design of my assessment.

   Pedagogical Approach
Design thinking

The 'Designtific' Method

Design Thinking

When I first read about the five modes of design thinking, the natural thought that popped into my head was the scientific method. Both methods are similar as they revolve around experimentation and exploration, continuous testing, and validation. In this project, I engaged with the five modes of the design thinking process to creatively solve my identified Problem of Practice.

Diversity

A Bird's Eye View on Curriculum

Equity in the Classroom

It is important to ensure the success of all learners. This can only be achieved by listening to others, educating ourselves, and valuing differences in the classroom. This piece of work is to help raise awareness on the issues of teaching a standardized curriculum while disregarding student diversity.
